Identifying False Prophets
Read first
Scripture warns repeatedly that false prophets will be a defining feature of the last days — both in the world and within the Church. God gives us clear tests to identify them.
The Biblical Tests
- Their prophecies do not come true (Deut 18:22)
- They lead people to follow false gods or idols (Exod 20:1–3)
- They deny the deity of Jesus Christ (1 John 4:1–3)
- They deny the humanity of Jesus Christ — docetism (1 John 4:1–2)
- They promote sexual immorality as acceptable (Jude 4–7)
- They spread 'doctrines of demons' — seducing spirits (1 Tim 4:1–2)
- They tell people what they want to hear rather than the truth (2 Tim 4:3–4)
- They come from within the Church — wolves in sheep's clothing (Acts 20:28–30)
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Q1. Jesus said false prophets come in 'sheep's clothing' (Matt 7:15). What does this tell us about how deceptive they will appear? What is the antidote?
Q2. Of the biblical tests listed above, which ones do you think the Church today most consistently fails to apply? Why?
Q3. How do you personally test teaching you receive — from sermons, books, podcasts, or social media — against Scripture?
Q4. The end-times False Prophet will perform signs and wonders to make people worship the Antichrist (Rev 13:13–14). How does this warn us not to use miracles alone as a test of true prophecy?
